Acoustic Effigies is an audio processing strategy for achieving natural, site-responsive re-radiation of existing recordings through stem isolation, convolution processing, and sound designer Dave Rat's novel '4D' speaker array. As listeners move through a shared environment they uncover a dynamic soundscape, rendering the performance in three dimensions as if it were happening live; as if the artist were in the room.
Acoustic Effigies is a means of reformatting stereo music- such as an MP3 file, CD, tape, or vinyl record- in order to project it through a set of multi-directional speakers. This allows each voice or isntrument to be physically located in a different place, and to be projected in a way that the listener's ear preceives as 'facing' a certain diretion. This creates a more convincing illusion of the sound source existing in the room than stereo or surround sound can, when listened to from any position rather than just one 'sweet spot'. This gives the listener agency to move about the environment and control their unique listening experience as they see fit.
Let's get to know each other.
